John 13:14-17 “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”
Jesus set this example of how to love others. The majority of the New Testament is dedicated to loving God and loving others, but the washing of feet is perfectly appropriate for a wedding. We make the choice to love another by serving that person. This kind of love is not based on fleeting emotions influenced by worldly things, but on the commitment to serve and love the other by washing and caring for what is most dirty. As I prepare for my own marriage, I am realizing how imperative this kind of servant love is to deepening and strengthening a marriage and relationship. Time and time again, with tenderness, compassion, and humility we must consider others better than ourselves (Philippians 2:1-3). Sometimes it seems as though the wedding industry has become inundated with business and aesthetics, which in and of themselves, are not bad things. But for Hayley and Nate, it was evident that these non-essentials, while making for a great celebration, took a significant back seat on their wedding day. In my years knowing Hayley and Nate, I have never once heard one speak negatively about the other. Their love exemplifies humility and service. They emulated Jesus’ example of how to love and serve others by washing each other’s feet and vowed to accomplish this decree symbolically each and every day of their lives. In front of family, friends, and our Savior, they made the life-long commitment to love and serve each other.
And like always, it was an honor to visually capture and preserve such sweet memories.
